A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling shown against a dark blue starry background.
A cursed boy learned to play Quidditch and wizardry between bouts of bullying and dark magic.

A short summary:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone introduces a boy marked by loss who discovers, almost by accident, that his life has been shaped by forces far larger than he ever imagined. Between bouts of bullying and brush-ups with dark magic, Harry learns wizardry, friendship, and the thrill of flight, finding his place in a world that finally sees him.

What begins with wonder and humor gradually reveals deeper truths about identity, courage, and choice. Hogwarts becomes both a refuge and a proving ground, where loyalty matters, evil hides in plain sight, and even the smallest acts of bravery can alter the course of a life.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Draco Doriens Nunquam Titillandus"
(never tickle a sleeping dragon)
-J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Latin motto “Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus” attributed to J.K. Rowling displayed against a star-filled night sky.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Can friends replace a family?

Do hardships create morals?

My review:

This is the book that launched a thousand broomsticks, and then some.

The Sorcerer’s Stone is a must-read not because it’s the darkest or most complex entry, but because it gets everything right at the start. The world is inviting, the magic feels limitless, and the emotional core is quietly strong. Harry’s story is one of survival before it is one of destiny, and that’s what makes it resonate.

There’s joy here. There’s safety. There’s the thrill of discovery. And underneath it all is the promise that kindness, courage, and chosen family matter.

Yay! Magic!
And a beginning that still holds up, decades later.
