A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

Book cover of What Happened to You? by Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey alongside text reading “A Short Summary & Review.”

Why you do the self-destructive things you do.

A short summary:

What Happened to You? reframes human behavior through the lens of lived experience, asking not what’s wrong with you, but what happened to you. Drawing on decades of neuroscience and trauma research, Bruce D. Perry explains how early experiences—especially childhood trauma—shape the brain, nervous system, and coping mechanisms well into adulthood. Through accessible conversations with Oprah Winfrey, the book connects science with compassion, offering a framework for understanding why people engage in self-destructive patterns and how healing begins with safety, regulation, and connection.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Rhythm is essential to a healthy body and a healthy mind."
- Bruce D. Perry, PHD, What Happened To You?

Questions to ponder while reading:

How was your childhood?

Do you struggle with your past?

My Review:

This book is a quiet paradigm shift. Rather than moralizing behavior, What Happened to You? invites curiosity, empathy, and context. The research is thorough without being overwhelming, grounded in real-life stories that make the science tangible and unsettling in the best way. The statistics around childhood trauma are sobering, but the tone is not despairing—it’s hopeful and deeply humane. This is not a quick read, but it’s an important one, especially for anyone interested in healing, resilience, or understanding themselves and others with more grace.
