A Rite of Fancy Book Recommendation and Review

A church and garden scene featuring the book cover of God’s Not Dead by Rice Broocks with text reading “A Short Summary & Review.”
The evidence of God's existence in everyday things.

A short summary:

In God’s Not Dead, Rice Broocks presents a readable, accessible case for the existence of God, rooted not only in philosophy and science but also in everyday human experience. Rather than constructing a purely academic argument, Broocks invites the reader to notice the signs of God embedded in reason, morality, beauty, and longing.

The book challenges atheism and philosophical naturalism by examining their internal contradictions — particularly the difficulty of explaining reason, meaning, and moral law in a purely material universe. Broocks draws on research from science, logic, history, and human psychology to argue that belief in God is not irrational, but deeply reasonable.

Throughout the book, complex ideas are translated into plain language, making apologetics approachable for readers without a background in theology or philosophy.

My favorite quote from the book:

"Atheism and naturalism can't account for reason. To say that reason came
into being for no reason is unreasonable."
- Rice Broocks, God's Not Dead

A church background with the quote, “Atheism and naturalism can’t account for reason…,” attributed to Rice Broocks.

Questions to ponder while reading:

Do you feel lost?

Do you think science proves or contradicts divinity?

My review:

This is a thoughtful and encouraging apologetics book that does not feel combative or cynical. Broocks offers solid research and clear reasoning while maintaining a pastoral tone that respects honest doubt and inquiry.

Some of the book’s strongest moments come when it connects abstract arguments to lived experience,  moments of beauty, moral clarity, suffering, and wonder that resist purely material explanations. Rather than attempting to “prove” God in a strict mathematical sense, God’s Not Dead makes the more persuasive case that belief in God best accounts for the world as we actually experience it.

While readers already familiar with classical apologetics may recognize some arguments, the book’s strength lies in its clarity and accessibility. It offers meaningful glimpses of God for seekers, believers, and those standing somewhere in between.
